Short answer: Kenya offers short-acting methods (pills, the Depo injection, condoms) and long-acting reversible methods (implants lasting 3–5 years and the IUCD/coil lasting up to 10–12 years). Long-acting methods are over 99% effective, and fertility returns after removal. A private counselling session helps you choose.
Every week we meet women who've put off family planning because of something a neighbour said. "Implants make you infertile." "The coil moves around the body." Neither is true. Here are the facts.
The methods at a glance
| Method | How long it works | How effective* | Fertility after stopping |
|---|---|---|---|
| Implant (small rod in the upper arm) | 3 or 5 years, depending on type | Over 99% | Returns quickly after removal |
| Copper IUCD / coil | Up to 10–12 years | Over 99% | Returns quickly after removal |
| Injection (Depo) | 3 months per injection | About 96% with typical use | Can take several months to return |
| Combined pill | Taken daily | About 93% with typical use | Returns quickly |
| Progestin-only pill | Taken daily at the same time | About 93% with typical use | Returns quickly |
| Male or female condom | Each use | About 87% male / 79% female with typical use | Immediate |
*Typical-use effectiveness: how well a method works in real life, including missed pills or late injections.
Condoms are the only method that also protects against HIV and other sexually transmitted infections.
Emergency contraception
If you've had unprotected sex or a method failed, emergency contraceptive pills work best as soon as possible, ideally within 72 hours. A copper IUCD inserted within five days is the most effective emergency option.
Common side effects
- Implants and injections: changes in menstrual bleeding (irregular, lighter or absent periods) are common and not harmful.
- Copper IUCD: periods may be heavier or more crampy for the first few months.
- Pills: mild nausea or spotting in the first months usually settles.
If side effects bother you, come back: switching methods is always an option.
Choosing what's right for you
Think about:
- How long you want to delay or space pregnancies
- Whether you can remember a daily pill or a three-monthly injection
- Your health: some conditions make certain methods unsuitable. Your provider will check.
- Breastfeeding: progestin-only methods, implants and the IUCD are suitable.

Frequently asked questions
What is the most effective family planning method?
Long-acting methods, implants and the IUCD (coil), are the most effective reversible methods, preventing more than 99% of pregnancies.
How soon can I get pregnant after removing an implant?
Fertility usually returns quickly after an implant or coil is removed, often within weeks. After stopping the Depo injection, it can take several months.
Do family planning methods cause infertility?
No. Modern family planning methods do not cause permanent infertility. Fertility returns after stopping; with the injection it may take longer.
