Short answer: Every adult should know three numbers: blood pressure (healthy: below 120/80 mmHg), fasting blood sugar (healthy: below 6.1 mmol/L) and BMI (healthy: 18.5–24.9). Check them at least once a year, and more often if you're over 40 or have a family history.
| Number | Healthy range | Check at least |
|---|---|---|
| Blood pressure | Below 120/80 mmHg | Once a year |
| Fasting blood sugar | Below 6.1 mmol/L | Once a year from 40, earlier if at risk |
| BMI (weight ÷ height²) | 18.5–24.9 | Once a year |
| Waist size | Women below 80 cm, men below 94 cm | Once a year |
Why it matters
Raised blood pressure and blood sugar usually have no symptoms until they've caused damage. Catching them early makes them much easier to control.
